Can I Buy a Car Out of State?

2021 GMC Yukon models

Many drivers limit themselves to vehicles at dealerships within their home state because they assume that buying a car out of state will be a hassle. Actually, it’s a lot easier to buy across state lines than you might think! Although you will need to worry about registration and associated taxes and fees, getting a great deal outside your state isn’t all that different from buying a car in Savannah — if you’re familiar with the process. That’s why the auto finance experts at Albright Buick GMC put together this guide to buying a car in another state. Read it below, and don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any further questions for us!

Buying a Car Out of State: Registration

After buying a car in another state, you’ll need to register the vehicle in your home state. Doing so will require a trip to the DMV and a few additional documents. First, locate your local DMV using a website like DMV Near Me. You’ll also want to ask your dealership for a bill of sale that clearly lists the purchase price of the vehicle. Then, bring the following documentation when you visit the DMV:

  • Bill of sale
  • Completed application for vehicle transaction form
  • Title of the vehicle signed by the previous owner (if a used model)
  • Lienholders’ names and address
  • Filled out odometer disclosure state for title transfer
  • Tax Form RUT-50 Private Party Vehicle Tax Transaction
  • Registration Fees
  • Proof of insurance
  • Proof of residency

Be sure to tell the DMV clerk that the car was purchased in another state, and that you’d like to title and register it at your home address. At this point, the clerk will return your bill of sale and keep your MO title, and you’ll be charged any difference in sales tax between the two states. Now all you need to do is keep an eye out for the new title in the mail!

Buying a Car out of State: Taxes & Fees

What payments will you need to make beyond the actual purchase price of your vehicle? When buying a car out of state, you’ll need to pay your local sales tax as well as any applicable processing fees at your DMV. The cost shouldn’t be much more than if you were registering a new car in your home state, so don’t worry that these added fees could cut into your savings!
